Why Are There So Many Spiders in South Florida?

Here in South Florida, we have just about every pest anyone can imagine. With months of constant rain and warm weather all year round, our climate is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and other bugs. With these bugs come their predators, and that means lots of spiders!

A few common places spiders like to hide include:

  • Corners
  • Closets
  • Cluttered areas
  • Vegetation/ plants
  • Under furniture
  • Woodpiles
  • Garages

This is even more enhanced for any of these areas that are rarely used or disturbed as it allows spiders to build long-term homes and nests.

How to Get Rid of Spiders

After you identify that you have spiders in your home, there are a few methods you can try to eliminate them:

Seal Cracks in Your Home

If you have spaces under your doors, between windows, or in your walls, these are all areas that spiders are able to get in. Seal up walls and windows and install door sweeps to help keep spiders out.

Eliminate Cluttered Areas

Spiders are notorious for hiding in cluttered areas, so try to keep corners, areas beneath the bed, attics, and garages as clutter-free as possible to eliminate hiding places.

Clean Out Cobwebs

Be sure to keep corners and ceilings clean of spider webs and cobwebs to make it harder for spiders to hang around.

Trim Trees and Shrubbery

This is especially important here in South Florida where we have lush vegetation year round. Keep plants and branches trimmed to keep spiders from building nests there. Shrubs that touch your home’s exterior act as an easy access bridge for spiders and other pests to get to your home.

Use Insecticides and Repellents

These can be useful but are generally ineffective on spiders since this requires a spider consume an insect that has come into direct contact with the insecticide. Chemical treatments are usually best left to experts who understand how to specifically target spiders.

While you don’t want spiders hanging around your house, keep in mind that spiders are also the main predators of other common bugs. Once you treat for spiders, it’s always a good idea to have someone inspect your home and treat for the other pests that spiders typically prey on.
